Exposure to the crypto market

While TD Ameritrade doesn't offer trading in individual cryptocurrencies, we do provide numerous ways to get exposure to the cryptocurrency market — no crypto wallet required.

Ways to invest in cryptocurrency at TD Ameritrade

  • OTC Trusts

These products allow investors to trade shares in trusts holding large pools of a cryptocurrency, although these can involve high volatility, hefty fees, and other risks. They trade over-the-counter (OTC) and behave like closed-end funds. The list of available products includes GBTC, ETHE, BITW, BCHG, GDLC, LTCN, and OBTC.

  • Mutual Funds & ETFs

Several mutual fund and ETF products invest in Bitcoin futures contracts, providing clients with a TD Ameritrade account a way to get indirect exposure. These funds can be found in Morningstar Category "Trading Miscellaneous"  using TD Ameritrade's Mutual Fund or ETF screeners.

  • Bitcoin Futures

If your account is futures approved, you can request access to trade Bitcoin futures and Micro Bitcoin futures through the CME exchange.  Learn more.

The risks and rewards

When you invest in cryptocurrencies, you get the benefits of portfolio diversification and the potential for appreciation. Before investing directly or indirectly, consider the volatility of the crypto market and the potential to lose money. Indirect investing in trusts, ETFs and mutual funds can involve high expenses, with fees exceeding 2% or more of the investment. Cryptocurrency futures are leveraged products, meaning you could lose more than you initially invested.

Virtual currencies, including bitcoin, experience significant price volatility. Fluctuations in the underlying virtual currency's value between the time you place a trade for a virtual currency futures contract and the time you attempt to liquidate it will affect the value of your futures contract and the potential profit and losses related to it. Investors must be very cautious and monitor any investment that they make.
